Walking With a Saint – 2010

The scriptures tell us of the incalculable value of even a moment’s association with a true saint, and Śrī Śrīmad Bhaktivedānta Nārāyaṇa Gosvāmī Mahārāja is exalted even among saints. With great sincerity, his disciples and followers thus availed themselves of any opportunity to accompany him on his morning walks and attend his morning darśanas. In those informal settings, they freely asked a variety of questions, his illuminating responses revealing a mere glimpse of the devotion radiating brilliantly within his heart. Sometimes personal, sometimes disciplinary, sometimes humorous and always loving, he would impart the deepest understandings of the scriptures for the benefit of all. It was on his repeated order that these walks and darśanas be transcribed and published. In this way, he has invited you, also, to walk with him and hear the jewel-like teachings he wants to share with you.

Again Ananta went to remove his hood from beneath the universe, this time successfully. The universe remained calmly in its place, hovering in space without moving. Ananta said, “Visvamirta, by this I have given my answer, which is for you to ascertain. Vasistha offered me the result of taking sadhu-sanga for a mere half a moment, and that in itself fully freed me of the burden. You were unable to arrange that for me.” So, taking sadhu-sanga for even a fraction of a second can change your entire life and make you happy forever.

For whatever we aspire to become, it is inspiring to associate with a master. This holds true for those of us who dream to be great athletes, musicians, artists, or businessmen.

Moreover, nowadays many of us are waking up to an understanding that we are spiritual beings; somewhere along the path of realizing that the purpose of human life is more than just survival and material accomplishments. We are beginning to see that we are souls, not just mechanical bodies. We see all around us the allure of material life, but our hearts are yearning for a deeper, richer, fuller experience. We want to taste God. We want to be whole and fulfilled, not for five minutes or five hours, but forever – and for that attainment, inspiring masters are also available.

These days we are very fortunate, because we have so much access to information through books and the internet. We also have access to the Vedas, the ancient scriptures, a vast opus compiled thousands of years ago in India by great sages in order to benefit mankind to progress along the path of self-realization.

However, there is such an enormous diversity of information available from these timeless books of wisdom, with so many interpretations, that choice can lead to confusion. Thus, we become like starving children entering a sumptuous restaurant. There is so much available, but what would be good for us to eat? What will really nourish us?

Siva Tattva

Siva Tattva

Śiva-tattva clarifies the truth (tattva) of Lord Śiva, particularly in relation to Lord Viṣṇu. Śrī Śrīmad Bhaktivedānta Nārāyaṇa Gosvāmī Mahārāja’s strong philosophical presentation is supported and enhanced by his rendition of numerous pastimes of Lord Śiva. This gives us a glimpse of Lord Śiva’s pure devotion to the Supreme Lord and of his endearing and affectionate nature.

Secret Truths of the Bhagavatam

Secret Truths of the Bhagavatam

In June 1999, Śrīla Bhaktivedānta Nārāyaṇa Gosvāmī Mahārāja spent ten days at the New Vraja community in Badger, California. There he gave a series of classes on the deep meanings of the Śrīmad-Bhāgavatam from the First Canto to the Tenth, culminating in the inner significance of Sri Krsna’s pastimes in Vṛndāvana. He explained that each śloka of the Bhāgavatam has many levels of meanings. When a faithful hearer understands these meanings in the association of Kṛṣṇa’s pure devotees, he becomes free from hunger, thirst, illusion, unhappiness and fear, and ultimately attains the association of Kṛṣṇa Himself.
